I Surrender
1st Gen.
(Three people stand on stage worshiping quietly. One is stage left, the other is stage right and the third is center stage.)
(When God speaks, it’s the voice you hear. You don’t see Him.)
GOD: Jared.
JARED: Yes, Lord?
GOD: Do you love me?
JARED: Of course I do!
GOD: I need you to do something for me.
JARED: Anything God! Anything at all! You just name it!
GOD: I need you to quit your job.
JARED: Wha- What? What do you mean? I worked harder than anybody to get where I am. I earned this job! Why would you want me to give it up?
GOD: You’ve been relying on the job for security instead of me. I have something better for you.
JARED: How could you possibly have something better for me? This was my goal! And I reached it! I achieved it!
GOD: I need you to trust me.
JARED: Trust you? How could I trust you?! Where were you when I was a kid? When my mom lost her job, and we lost the house? We had to sleep in the car! Where were you then?! Huh?!
GOD: Trust me.
JARED: I can’t and I won’t.
(Jared turns away and walks upstage with his back to the audience)
GOD: Nick.
NICK: Yes, God?
GOD: Do you love me?
NICK: Yes, God! I love you so much!
GOD: I need you to do something for me.
NICK: Whatever you want, God.
GOD: I need you to give up drinking.
NICK: Drinking? What do you mean? It’s not a problem for me. I just open a bottle or two after work to unwind.
GOD: You’ve been going to Alcohol for your problems instead of me.
NICK: Okay, maybe I drink when I’m down. But it’s only because I don’t feel you all the time. I’m in so much pain and depression, God. Sometimes drinking is the only thing that helps. I don’t want this pain anymore, God!
GOD: I need you to trust me, Nick.
NICK: Trust you? How can I trust you? Remember when my brother was sick? I prayed every day. I BEGGED you to heal him! But he died, God! I trusted you and he died!
GOD: Nick, trust me.
NICK: I can’t… I won’t.
(Nick turns away and walks upstage with his back to the audience)
GOD: Beth.
BETH: Yes, God?
GOD: Do you love me?
BETH: You know I do, God!
GOD: I need you to do something for me.
BETH: Anything God! Anything at all!
GOD: I need you to breakup with your Fiancé.
BETH: Break up? Wha- What are you talking about? He’s perfect for me.
GOD: I have somebody better for you. And for him.
BETH: But I don’t understand God! We’ve been pure. We’ve honored you with our relationship!
GOD: I need you to trust me.
BETH: I met him at youth group! We’ve been together for years. Everyone thinks we’re perfect together!
GOD: Beth, trust me.
BETH: I- I can’t… (Starts to turn away from God like the others did, but turns back to God and falls on her knees) But I will! Because I love you!
(God starts to recite a verse. As soon as God talks, Beth lifts her hands up in worship.)
GOD: If anyone desires to come after me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross and follow me. And if he truly loves me, he will follow all my commands.
THE END
